I fell in love social media years ago. My favorite site has always been Facebook. Hands down. Twitter’s 140 character rule seemed too restrictive for this wordy girl. And it frustrates me when I can’t enlarge photos on Instagram to see all the cute, smiling faces.
Through Facebook, I’ve been able to connect with old friends from my hometown and keep track of family members scattered throughout the country. I belong to “groups” of people who have similar interests and career tracks. I have laughed out loud and shed a few tears watching the YouTube videos and reading articles posted by a Facebook friend.
My wacky group of friends and family runs the gamut. They include black, white, yellow and brown. Some are in same-sex relationships, others married their high school sweethearts. Some are Jewish, others worship Buddha. Some are liberal, others conservative. Some have PhD’s, others have GED’s.
We are an odd and colorful bunch!
Recently, I’ve noticed an ugly trend of posting things that are horribly offensive and downright unnecessary. Sadly, I have played my part in this nonsense. I have taken the bait, like a nitwit. But I am also guilty of casting a little out there too. Ugh.
How dumb and insensitive is that?
REAL.
So starting today I choose to use Facebook differently.
No longer will I allow myself to read, “Like”, post or reply to anyone who is bashing anyone due to their color, race, faith, political views or opinions. I vow to do my best to keep my Facebook Newsfeed free of such nonsense.
I will, however, look forward to all the funny cat videos, kids, wedding and graduation photos. And I am a sucker for great inspirational quotes, so please keep those coming!
